Abstract: The costs involved in earthworks and paving for a highway can vary widely due to factors such as location, site characteristics, pavement type, material availability, project requirements, and construction delays. Regarding the GO-591 Highway specifically the section between the municipality of Cabeceiras de Goiás and the GO-MG state border significant discrepancies were observed between projected/tendered figures and the costs actually incurred during execution. Given this context, this study aims to identify the primary drivers of cost variations across each phase of the process by critically analyzing the cost differences. To achieve this objective, an exploratory applied research study was conducted using a quantitative approach and a deductive method, enabling a detailed analysis of the variables influencing the project's financial execution. Analysis of the data revealed significant budgetary variations in both service categories studied: earthworks and paving. These variations stemmed from contract amendments necessitated by delays in the physical-financial schedule and contractual price adjustments, as the initial contract stipulated a seven-month completion timeline. However, due to work stoppages and fluctuations in the prices of paving inputs and asphalt materials, the schedule was extended by 18 months, resulting in significant financial impacts on the earthworks and paving components by the project's conclusion

Abstract: Advances in digital technologies have brought about significant changes in the design and development processes of civil engineering projects, especially in the areas of urban infrastructure and basic sanitation. In this context, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has emerged as a methodology capable of integrating geometric, technical, and quantitative information within a collaborative digital environment, in contrast to conventional methods based on two-dimensional Computer-Aided Design (CAD). The objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the application of the conventional CAD method and the BIM methodology in the development of sewer collection network designs for an open urban subdivision, through a case study. The case study was applied to an urban development consisting of 988 lots, located in Minas Gerais, whose original CAD design called for the installation of a Sewage Pumping Station (SPS) due to the supposed impossibility of gravity flow. The methodology adopted is characterized as applied research, developed based on the technical analysis of an existing CAD project and the subsequent modeling of the sewer collection system in a BIM environment, using Autodesk Civil 3D® software. The methodological steps include the analysis of the conventional design, the creation of the terrain surface based on the final contour lines, the development of the BIM model of the sewer system, and a technical and cost comparison between the methodologies. Based on the BIM modeling, it was possible to parametrically adjust factors such as the slope and depth of the manholes to enable gravity flow, thereby eliminating the need for a pumping station. The cost analysis revealed that, although the costs of the sewer system increased due to the deeper installation of pipes and manholes, the elimination of the pumping station resulted in an overall savings of 17.1% for the developers. It is concluded that the BIM methodology provides greater precision in project development and contributes to reducing the overall costs of the project.

Abstract: Quality Management plays a fundamental role in preventing failures, reducing waste, and promoting continuous improvement in construction processes. In this context, tools such as Service Execution Procedures (SEP) and Service Inspection Forms (SIF) support quality control and the identification of nonconformities that may lead to rework, additional costs, and project delays. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and analyze the main nonconformities observed during the finishing phase of a multifamily residential building project located in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil, as well as to propose improvement opportunities for the company's Quality Management System (QMS). To achieve this objective, inspections were conducted in 80 housing units, resulting in a total of 667 recorded occurrences. The data were organized and prioritized using the Pareto Diagram and subsequently analyzed through Ishikawa Diagrams developed from field observations, Service Inspection Forms (SIF), and Service Execution Procedures (SEP). The results showed that more than 80% of the occurrences were concentrated in finishing and gypsum board services. Among the prioritized nonconformities were hollow-sounding floor tiles, inadequate floor slope toward drains, missing electrical wiring routing, and clogged drains. The analyses indicated that a significant portion of these occurrences was associated with deficiencies in execution procedures, limitations in quality control mechanisms, and incompatibilities between design solutions and execution requirements. It was concluded that the integrated application of quality management tools enabled the identification of the main causes of rework observed in the project, providing support for improvements in execution procedures, inspection controls, workforce training, and service coordination, thereby contributing to the continuous improvement of the construction process.

Abstract: The Finite Element Method (FEM) is one of the most widely used numerical tools in contemporary structural analysis, forming the basis of several commercial software packages employed in civil engineering projects. Despite its relevance, an introductory study of the FEM is not systematically addressed in the undergraduate curriculum of Civil Engineering at several Brazilian institutions, which motivated this work as a supporting material for students beginning their studies in the field. This Final Course Work aims to present, in an introductory manner, the mathematical formulation of the FEM based on the Rayleigh-Ritz Method, covering the concepts of variational calculus necessary for its understanding. To this end, the concepts of functional, variational operator δ, extrema of a functional, and the derivation of the Euler-Lagrange equation were systematically developed. Subsequently, the Rayleigh-Ritz Method was formulated and applied to a simply supported beam subjected to a uniformly distributed load, recovering the classical analytical expression of the deflection. Finally, the method was applied to the formulation of the one-dimensional beam finite element with four nodal displacements, obtaining the 4 × 4 stiffness matrix K(e) and the equivalent nodal force vector f (e) characteristic of the classical FEM beam element. The results obtained demonstrate the theoretical consistency of the Rayleigh-Ritz Method as the variational foundation of the FEM and reinforce its role as a didactic bridge between the classical methods of structural analysis and modern numerical methods.
